The "Travelers" find their tribe in Bombay Beach

Our Southern California road trip took us on a fascinating detour to the Salton Sea. This place has always captivated me, with its echo of a glamorous mid-century past, particularly the iconic architecture of Albert Frey's North Shore Beach and Yacht Club. Lately, the Bombay Beach Biennale has added a layer of "Mad Max meets Burning Man" intrigue.

Our visit in mid-June landed us smack in the middle of a scorching heat wave – 112-115 degrees Fahrenheit, amplified by a surprising 40% humidity thanks to a Mexican monsoon. This otherworldly atmosphere undeniably intensified the Salton Sea's end-of-the-world vibe, though it did make capturing artistic photos of my ceramics a bit tricky.

After exploring the desolate beauty of Bombay Beach, we crossed the berm to the heart of the Biennale. The sight of sculptural installations baking under the relentless sun was both eerie and oddly awe-inspiring. It felt like a fitting backdrop for my "travelers" pieces, which embody the spirit of embarking on a life journey, guided by the individual's own compass.
